Villa Andina – Superfoods from the Heart of Peru
Villa Andina Superfoods was born from a deep connection to Peru's land and farming communities. Co-founded by Jennifer Housman, a British biologist who spent years working in rural development across Peru's northern highlands, the company set out with a clear purpose: to bring the best of Peru's superfoods to the world while creating lasting value for the smallholder farmers who grow them.
Based in Chiclayo, in Peru's northern Lambayeque region, Villa Andina operates a BRC Grade A certified processing facility producing fine-flavour cacao products including nibs, powder, butter and paste, dehydrated fruits such as mango, pineapple, banana and goldenberry, and Andean superfoods including maca powder and lucuma powder. Their cacao is sourced from smallholder farmers in the Amazon regions of Amazonas, San Martin and Ucayali, while their fruits come from the fertile valleys of Piura, Lambayeque and La Libertad.
Villa Andina works closely with over 415 farming families, helping them access Fairtrade and Organic certification, improve their practices, and earn better incomes. Sixty-five percent of their workforce are women, and the company is 67% woman-owned. Their certifications include Organic, Fairtrade International, Rainforest Alliance, BRC and Kosher.
Gluten Free Oatmeal of Alford
Our oat supplier, Oatmeal of Alford, has been farming on their third generation farm in the North East of Scotland since the 1940s. Sustainability has always been at the heart of what they do, from planting hedges around fields and creating dedicated areas for wildlife, to being early adopters of renewable energy.
Their home farm has been organic for over 40 years. The land is managed in rotations to allow it to recover between crops, and no chemical applications are used in the growing of their organic oats.
They also work with a neighbouring estate to grow conventional gluten-free oats. These are grown with minimal inputs, similar to organic methods, with only a small amount of fertiliser and a single spray for weeds after spring planting. The oat itself never comes into contact with chemicals, and no fungicides or pesticides are used at any stage.
Oats are a hardy crop, well suited to the rolling hills of Aberdeenshire, where wildlife and nature thrive alongside the growing fields. In fact, one of the biggest challenges they face is deer and birds eating the oats as they grow.
