Zapatista Coffee

News

Grown on the high altitude, misty mountains of Chiapas, South Mexico, Zapatista is produced by small scale indigenous farming co-operatives.

These coops were formed in the wake of Mexico's 12 day uprising in Chiapas, in 1994.

They are united in their support for the “Zapatista” movement.

"Zapatistas" are found amongst the indigenous people and communities of Mexico. The name coming from revolutionary hero "Emiliano Zapata". They have adopted have adopted both the name and his slogan "Tierra y Libertad”, which translates as “Land and Freedom”.

The movement combines indigenous traditions with anti-capitalist, anti-globalisation, women’s rights and libertarian socialist ideals.

Many of the farmers in these communities have been growing coffee beans for generations, using traditional methods that prioritise the land and the people over quick profits.
