Wholefood Supplier Stories Home About Us Wholefood Supplier Stories THE LESBIAN DONKEY The Lesbian Donkey is a cherished family venture established in 2013, rooted in the picturesque Plomari region. Situated amidst challenging terrain, their olive groves thrive through traditional cultivation methods, eschewing modern machinery. Guided by the principles of organic farming, only tree-ripened fruits are handpicked, while fallen produce enriches the soil naturally. With gentle care, olives are gathered using time-honoured chestnut wood sticks, then swiftly transported to the nearby mill for cold pressing in Palaiochori village. This blend of tradition and innovation yields a superior product, a testament to our commitment to quality. “We don’t just buy from anyone. Sustainability has always been at the heart of what they do, from planting hedges around fields and creating dedicated areas for wildlife, to being early adopters of renewable energy. Their home farm has been organic for over 40 years. The land is managed in rotations to allow it to recover between crops, and no chemical applications are used in the growing of their organic oats. They also work with a neighbouring estate to grow conventional gluten-free oats. These are grown with minimal inputs, similar to organic methods, with only a small amount of fertiliser and a single spray for weeds after spring planting. The oat itself never comes into contact with chemicals, and no fungicides or pesticides are used at any stage. Oats are a hardy crop, well suited to the rolling hills of Aberdeenshire, where wildlife and nature thrive alongside the growing fields. In fact, one of the biggest challenges they face is deer and birds eating the oats as they grow.
