Zapatista Coffee

News

Grown on the high altitude, misty mountains of Chiapas, South Mexico, Zapatista coffee is produced by small scale indigenous farming co-operatives. These coops were formed in the wake of Mexico's 12 day uprising in Chiapas, in 1994. They are united in their support for the “Zapatista” movement.

"Zapatistas" are found amongst the indigenous people and communities of Mexico. The name coming from revolutionary hero "Emiliano Zapata". They have adopted both the name and his slogan "Tierra y Libertad”, which translates as “Land and Freedom”. The movement combines indigenous traditions with anti-capitalist, anti-globalisation, women’s rights and libertarian socialist ideals.

Organically farmed Mexican coffee beans

Many of the farmers in these communities have been growing coffee beans for generations, using traditional methods that prioritise the land and the people over quick profits. Zapatista coffee plays an important role in supporting the coffee farmers, their families and communities.

Cafe Libertad Kollectiv, the importer pays the best possible price for small-scale farmers and cooperatives' work. Essential Trading, the importer of Zapatista, donates 40 pence from every kilo of coffee sold, directly to help finance:

But does the ground coffee taste any good?

The spirit and character of Chiapas coffee comes from the High Altitude. The nutrient rich volcanic soil, shade and high altitude of the Chiapas mountain region, produces some of Mexico's best coffee. Zapatista is no exception. Complex, smooth and well balanced Arabica beans, with a slightly earthy, full aroma. No compromise required, good coffee with a conscience for good people.
